You cannot install official DLSS 5 neural rendering on an RTX 30 series card. NVIDIA lists RTX 50 cards, RTX 50 laptops, and GeForce NOW as supported. An RTX 3070 or 3080 can still use Super Resolution with a current Game Ready driver. Unofficial DLL mods exist, but reports of Ampere tests describe falling frame rates.
After patching NBA 2K27, an RTX 3080 owner whose card has stayed in the same rig since 2021 may look in Video Settings for “DLSS Neural Rendering” and find Super Resolution or Ray Reconstruction instead. The missing toggle is a hardware support limit, not a driver glitch.
NVIDIA’s GeForce launch post names the supported hardware. Henry Lin wrote on 1 September 2026: “DLSS 5 is available starting now in NBA 2K27, from developer Visual Concepts and publisher 2K, for all GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs and laptops, and GeForce NOW.” The list does not include Ampere.
Does an RTX 3070 or 3080 get official DLSS 5 in the NVIDIA app?
No. The NVIDIA app and a Game Ready driver will not add a DLSS 5 neural rendering switch to a 30 series card. NVIDIA’s laptop comparison table labels RTX 30 hardware as DLSS 2. 3D-Guided Neural Rendering is marked Yes only in the RTX 50 column.
“DLSS” covers features with different hardware requirements. The table lists Ampere with 2nd gen RT cores and 3rd gen Tensor cores, while Blackwell has 4th gen RT cores and 5th gen Tensor cores. Its DLSS feature rows distinguish the generations as well.
| Feature | RTX 50 | RTX 40 | RTX 30 (Ampere) |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA DLSS label | DLSS 5 | DLSS 3 | DLSS 2 |
| 3D-Guided Neural Rendering | Yes | No | No |
| Dynamic Multi Frame Generation | Yes | No | No |
| Frame Generation | Yes | Yes | No |
| Super Resolution | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Ray Reconstruction | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| DLAA | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Source: NVIDIA’s GeForce laptop comparison, retrieved 27 September 2026. Desktop Ampere uses the same generation of Tensor cores. A separate desktop matrix was not verified for this draft.
NVIDIA’s developer DLSS page also states the hardware requirement for extra frames: “DLSS Multi Frame Generation boosts frame rates by using AI to generate up to five frames per rendered frame powered by NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 Series and RTX PRO Blackwell Generation GPUs with fifth-generation Tensor Cores.”
If you bought a 3070 in 2020, Super Resolution and DLAA are still the official levers. Frame Generation was an Ada (40 series) add-on. Multi Frame Generation and the DLSS 5 neural pass are Blackwell. Updating the NVIDIA app does not rewrite that table.
What do I actually install on a 30 series card if I still want sharper frames?
Install a current Game Ready driver, then turn on DLSS Super Resolution inside the game. That is the supported upscaler on Ampere. Start with Quality at 1440p. Use Performance if you are forcing 4K on an 8 GB 3070 and the card is already swapping.
The Game Ready driver that shipped with NBA 2K27 is 616.64, posted 3 September 2026. Andrew Burnes’s write-up is about DLSS 5 in that one title. On a 3080, the same driver family still matters for bug fixes and Super Resolution models. It will not grow a Neural Rendering checkbox.
For the supported setup on Ampere:
- Open NVIDIA App (or the driver download page if you refuse the app) and install the latest Game Ready package for your exact 30 series SKU.
- Reboot once before checking whether the “DLSS greyed out” problem persists.
- In the game, set the upscaler to DLSS. Quality at 1440p. Balanced or Performance at 4K if VRAM is already tight.
- If the game has Ray Reconstruction, try it on a save you can reload. It is listed as Yes for Ampere on NVIDIA’s table. It is still a denoiser cost.
- Leave Frame Generation alone. On a stock 30 series install, that control should be missing or greyed out.
Confirm the game is using the RTX card, not an Intel or AMD iGPU, before you blame DLSS. Windows can silently render a launcher on the wrong adapter after a driver swap.
You do not install a separate “DLSS 5 package” from NVIDIA for Ampere. There is no official installer, no overlay switch, no GeForce NOW workaround that suddenly makes a local 3070 into a 5070.
Why do unofficial DLSS 5 DLLs often tank FPS on Ampere?
Because Ampere’s Tensor cores are two generations behind the ones NVIDIA trained DLSS 5 on. The laptop table lists 3rd gen Tensor cores on RTX 30 and 5th gen on RTX 50. Early unofficial ports did not look like a free visual upgrade.
PCMag reported the early Ampere ports in plain numbers: “That’s why early mods that got the new DLSS technology working on RTX 30-series GPUs encountered frame rates in the single digits, even at 720p and 1080p resolution.”
Consider the example of a 3080 running Cyberpunk at 90 FPS at 1440p Quality before someone copies a leaked nvngx_dlss.dll and enables a community overlay. PCMag’s early Ampere results show why checking the frame rate afterward matters. PCMag also noted power draw spiking on those ports. No wattage was measured for this draft, so a specific watt figure from a community post remains unverified.
DLSS 5 is not another Super Resolution preset. NVIDIA describes a 3D-guided pass that takes color and motion vectors and repaints lighting and materials. On Blackwell, Super Resolution and Multi Frame Generation exist partly to pay that bill. On Ampere you still pay the bill. You just do not get the official extra generated frames to hide it.
Community wrappers change the order of operations. A YouTube test of OptiScaler 0.6.2 on an RTX 5080 argued that running neural rendering before Super Resolution wasted fewer frames than stacking the pass on a finished 4K image. Those FPS traces come from the presenter on a 50 series card, not an Ampere test. On a 3070, the same order might cost fewer frames than 4K-then-neural, but it cannot change the 3rd gen Tensor cores into 5th gen cores.
Do not chase a leaked DLL because a screenshot said “DLSS 5 ON.” Ask what the base frame rate was before the overlay. If the 1% lows were already 40, a heavier model will not rescue them.
Can a GitHub mod add frame generation to an RTX 30 card without NVIDIA’s pipeline?
Yes, some GitHub mods can invent extra frames on a 3080. They often do it with AMD FSR 3.1, not NVIDIA’s own Frame Generation. You still need a DirectX 12 game that already exposes DLSS upscaling and a frame-gen hook.
Tom’s Hardware, covering the DLSS Unlocked package, put it this way: “On RTX 20- and RTX 30-series GPUs, you’ll be using AMD’s FSR 3.1 to interpolate all of the frames instead of using Nvidia’s pipeline.”
The mod combines a community neural DLL with an AMD interpolator rather than adding NVIDIA Frame Generation to Ampere. The game must already have DLSS upscaling and a frame generation hook. Tom’s also said it must use DirectX 12 and that the user supplies a patched DLSS 5 DLL.
TechPowerUp later wrote about a different project, DLSSG SM86, which tries to keep NVIDIA’s own DLSS models and proxy them onto SM86 (Ampere). TPU: “A new mod called DLSSG SM86 lets GeForce RTX 30-series owners run DLSS Multi Frame Generation in 2X and 4X modes, a feature NVIDIA officially reserves for RTX 50-series “Blackwell” GPUs.” The developer notes TPU cited used an RTX 3080 Ti on driver 591.86 in D3D12, and claimed Black Myth: Wukong going from 50 FPS to 150 FPS at 4X, and path-traced Cyberpunk 2077 from 35 FPS to 100 FPS. TPU also said the developer had not finished formal frametime, latency, or long-run stability tests. A YouTube clip TPU linked, from fogoticus on an RTX 3080, showed Cyberpunk around 42 FPS, then 74 in 2X, then 120 in 4X. Those are third-party traces, not NVIDIA’s.
| Report | Card | What ran | Headline FPS |
|---|---|---|---|
| PCMag on early unofficial DLSS 5 | RTX 30 series, unspecified SKU | leaked neural DLL | single digits at 720p and 1080p |
| DLSSG SM86 developer notes, via TechPowerUp | RTX 3080 Ti | 4X frame gen, Black Myth: Wukong | 50 to 150 |
| Same notes, via TechPowerUp | RTX 3080 Ti | path-traced Cyberpunk 2077 | 35 to 100 |
| fogoticus, via TechPowerUp | RTX 3080 | Cyberpunk 2X / 4X | about 42 to 74 to 120 |
None of those rows is an official NVIDIA benchmark. A high overlay FPS figure cannot establish low input latency. The mods were not tested on an RTX 30 series card for this draft, so this is not a firsthand recommendation.
If you still go looking on GitHub or Nexus, treat it as a per-game experiment on a copy you can roll back. Anti-cheat bans for DLL injection are unverified in this piece because I did not audit any one title’s policy. Overlay FPS is not the same as input latency. And “6X” on a 35 FPS base is still a 35 FPS game with extra interpolated pictures.
For an Ampere card, install the current Game Ready driver and use Super Resolution in supported games. NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 release for NBA 2K27 lists RTX 50 hardware and GeForce NOW instead.
Frequently asked questions
Will the next Game Ready driver unlock DLSS 5 on my 3080?
NVIDIA has not posted an Ampere path. The 1 September 2026 GeForce article names RTX 50 GPUs, RTX 50 laptops, and GeForce NOW. PCMag says NVIDIA has talked about bringing official DLSS 5 to RTX 40 cards later, with a heavier performance cost. That is not a 30 series promise. Wait for NVIDIA to name Ampere in a support matrix before you expect a toggle.
Is turning on DLSS Quality the same as installing DLSS 5?
No. Quality, Balanced, and Performance are Super Resolution modes. They render fewer pixels and reconstruct a sharper image. DLSS 5 in NBA 2K27 is a separate neural rendering pass for lighting and materials. Ampere can use Super Resolution today. It cannot use that NBA 2K27 pass through NVIDIA’s installer.
Can I use GeForce NOW to try DLSS 5 without buying a 50 series card?
NVIDIA’s launch post includes GeForce NOW alongside RTX 50 desktop and laptop GPUs. The rendering happens in a cloud session; it does not add Tensor cores to a local 3070. The GeForce NOW tier with Blackwell-class rigs was not verified for this draft, so the membership SKU remains unverified.
If OptiScaler works on a 5080, should I copy that setup onto a 3070?
Only if you account for Ampere’s Tensor limit. The OptiScaler 0.6.2 video tested neural rendering before Super Resolution on an RTX 5080. PCMag reported single-digit FPS on early Ampere ports before frame generation. An overlay configuration from a 50 series card does not establish the same performance on an 8 GB 3070.
